Solenoids

  • A solenoid is a coil of wire, which generates a strong magnetic field
  • Increasing the number of turns or the current increases the strength of the magnetic field generated.
  • Adding a ferromagnetic core also increases the magnetic field strength
  • Use the solenoid right hand rule to determine the direction of the field
    • Your fingers curl in the direction of flow of positive charge! Thumb indicates the N end of the solenoid
