Atoms and Ions
- Can use the periodic table to find proton, neutron & electron numbers
- Use diagrams to represent the arrangement of protons, neutrons and electrons in atoms
- Write electron configurations for the first 20 elements and their ions
- Locate groups 1, 2, 16, 17, 18 elements on the periodic table and identify their number of valence electrons
- Can describe why ions form and identify the difference between cations & anions
- Describe how ionic bonds are formed from the transfer of electrons
- Count atoms in ionic formula
- Use a table of ions to write and name simple ionic formulae
- Balance simple equations
Acids and Bases
- Describe the general properties of acids, bases and neutral solutions
- Explain the pH scale and use it to determine if a substances is an acid, base, or neutral
- Can use a range of indicators to identify acids and bases
- Recall the names and formula for some common acids: $HCl$, $H_{2}SO_{4}$, $HNO_{3}$
- Identify the acids and bases from a list of common consumer products
- Discuss how $OH^{-}$ ions & $H^{+}$ ions form neutral solutions
- Can discuss real life situations where neutralization is necessary
- Name the products and write word equations and balanced symbol equations for acid/base reactions
