Elements
A substance made of only one type of atom is an
element.
- Everything on Earth is made up of elements!
- The smallest pieces of matter are called
atoms
- Hydrogen gas is only made of hydrogen atoms, and is
therefore an element
- Carbon dioxide is \(CO_{2}\) and is made of carbon and oxygen
\(\rightarrow\) not an element!
- Water is \(H_{2}O\) (hydrogen and oxygen) \(\rightarrow\) not an element!
Chemical Symbols
- The symbol for many of the most common elements
uses just the first letter of its name.
- H is Hydrogen
- O is Oxygen
- The first letter is always written as a
capital
