  • Everything in the world is made of elements.
  • Scientists use the Periodic Table to organise elements.

Elements

A substance made of only one type of atom is an element.

  • Everything on Earth is made up of elements!
  • The smallest pieces of matter are called atoms
  • Hydrogen gas is only made of hydrogen atoms, and is therefore an element
  • Carbon dioxide is \(CO_{2}\) and is made of carbon and oxygen \(\rightarrow\) not an element!
  • Water is \(H_{2}O\) (hydrogen and oxygen) \(\rightarrow\) not an element!

Chemical Symbols

  • The symbol for many of the most common elements uses just the first letter of its name.
  • H is Hydrogen
  • O is Oxygen
  • The first letter is always written as a capital
