Periodic Table ^🔗

• Everything in the world is made of elements.
• Scientists use the Periodic Table to organise elements.

Elements ^🔗

A substance made of only one type of atom is an element.

• Everything on Earth is made up of elements!
• The smallest pieces of matter are called atoms
• Hydrogen gas is only made of hydrogen atoms, and is therefore an element
• Carbon dioxide is $CO_{2}$ and is made of carbon and oxygen $\rightarrow$ not an element!
• Water is $H_{2}O$ (hydrogen and oxygen) $\rightarrow$ not an element!

Chemical Symbols ^🔗

• The symbol for many of the most common elements uses just the first letter of its name.
• H is Hydrogen
• O is Oxygen
• The first letter is always written as a capital

• Other elements have their first two letters are their label
• Li is Lithium
• He is Helium
• The second letter is always lower case

• Some symbols are not always what you expect
• K is Potassium
• Na is Sodium
